Trail Blazing in the Blow-Dart Filled Jungle of my Mind

Machete out, and flailing, I’ve been trying to clear enough head-space to be creative. The ole 9-5 has been difficult to ignore during the 6-8 time, I'm going to have to train myself to put it down at 5. Audio books and podcasts seem to help.

I listen to them on my 20 minute commutes to and fro the job, and recently installed a new stereo in my car, just so I could use my iPhone on the road more safely. At times I gear up for work with an alpha-geek pod-cast, such as TechSNAP. But, more often than naught, and especially on the way home, I like me a steaming cup of fantasy or sci-fi to calm my nerves in traffic.

The last few months I've enjoyed the Kushiel's Legacy series, an epic fantasy with erotic twists and mind-provoking insights about love. I listened to the intense three book series, often finding it difficult to get out of the car when I reached my destination. The reader of this series, Ann Flosnic, has wonderful tone and differentiation between characters. I liked this series enough that I went to a reading done by the author, she was just as charming and clever in person. I’m looking forward to more of Jacqueline Carey’s work.

This month’s audio book is a wonderful steam-punk-meets-the-supernatural -- with a parasol -- Soulless by Gail Carriger. Victorian humour abounds, with a touch of romance, fashion, and science geekery filled with vampires, dirigibles, petty-coats, werewolves, mad-scientists, tea-time, and ass-kicking parasols mix together in a wild and funny tale. Emily Gray narrates this book with a fantastic array of voices, something that is nearly required when I choose audio books.

How do you keep yourself calm and sane when dealing with the hectic pace at work?
